What Our 2.5 Year Old is Like

My youngest daughter turned 2.5 on Monday, and I thought I’d mark the occasion by jotting down a few notes to capture her at this age. Toddlers feel like they are constantly in the process of transformation, so I want to remember:

*How much she loves to climb at this age. She suddenly seems so brave and capable when we visit the park.

*Her love of baby dolls. She is constantly pushing a stroller, finding a bottle, wrapping a baby in a dish towel, singing to the baby, or telling me the baby is sad/hungry/wants to play.

*That she loves snuggling up and being read to. She’s old enough to attend to books more often and have distinct preferences. At this age she really loves Julia Donaldson books, the Story Orchestra books that play music, Jill McDonald’s Hello World series with books about camping, the body, etc. She also loves some of the Lovevery books that have real photos of kids like You Can Do It Sullivan and The Sleepover.

*How snuggly and sweet she is at this age. She likes to say “I love you SO much” over and over and loves being held. She also gives us lots of hugs with back pats and jumping high fives.

*Hard things about this age: so much discomfort with teething and clinginess. She’s also starting to have some outbursts when she is frustrated and will lie on the ground and cry, which is normal, but never fun.

*That she’s hit the do-it-yourself phase. She is much happier and feels so proud when she puts on her clothes, participates in a step of making something, or helps me carry something.

*Seeing how much she is able to hang in there and play with her older sister. It’s fun to see her initiate games with her sister or start to understand the rules of the games they play.

*How chatty she is at this age. She can tell us so much about what she wants, what she remembers, and what she’s thinking. It’s very fun to hear her reminisce about places we have gone and feels like such a different way of interacting with her than when she was younger and had fewer words.

If you have kids in your life, whether your own, nieces or nephews, or friend’s children, do you ever note what they are like at a certain age? What’s something you want to remember about this age?

  1. This is a great record of her at this moment in time. Wonderful idea. I kept baby books for my kids when they were little and I have a journal with some funny stories. I used to take the camcorder out quite often and interview them or record them while they were playing. Such a fun age. She sounds so sweet.

    1. I don't take many videos, but I should! I think it's hard because when I take out my phone then I'm distracted too. But also it's so funny to see videos of kids at younger ages.

  2. This is such a fun age. I remember my niece being that age and I just loved her curiosity and chattiness!

    1. It sounds like you are really close to your niece. Do you get to see her often?

  3. Aw, she sounds wonderful! To be honest, I try to forget what my daughter was like at 2 1/2, ha ha. Actually I'm not kidding- she REALLY had the terrible twos. She spent a lot of time having tantrums, refusing to wear clothes, and not sleeping. Glad you are NOT having that experience!

    1. I remember 3 being more difficult for my older daughter, so we may be in for it. That said, I may have jinxed my youngest because she had an epic meltdown last night. I think it was mainly teething related, and it passed, but toddlers can really change the energy of the room in dramatic ways.

  4. It all sounds very familiar, very much like my little granddaughter who is the same age. I've always hated it when people say the terrible twos, I think the twos are terrific! It's my very favorite age. Enjoy!

  5. When my nephews were younger, I just remember how exciting each new age was. So many new milestones to achieve and it was so fun to see their personalities take shape. Now they're grumpy teenagers. ;)

Sometimes I wish it was socially acceptable to lay down on the floor and cry when I'm frustrated. Toddlers have it MADE.

  6. I bet you will appreciate documenting this age in years to come.
I dont have kids so I can not really relate. when I see my nieces and nephews it's always bigger spurts of development. Being in the midst it is slower and suddenly there I guess.

What's Saving My Life: Sick Kid Edition

As I wrote yesterday, one of my daughters got sick, and so we didn’t make it to our camping trip! I had a really good attitude about it for most of the day and mostly felt grateful that she got sick at home and not 2 hours away, in the desert, where we would have to completely takedown a campsite before leaving. But by the afternoon, I was feeling a little grumpy and bummed to miss an adventure we’d been looking forward to and also cooped up from being inside all day with a kid who wasn’t feeling well. Inspired by San’s recent “Five Things That are Saving My Life Right Now” post, I decided to make my own list that was specific to sick days at home. In no particular order: *Emkfit videos on youtube. It’s awesome to have such a fun, silly, sweaty workout to do. I always feel happier having done the dance videos, and it really helps my mood on days when I’m at home a lot and restless *Good books. I posted earlier this week that October was not the best reading month for me, and so I spen...

Adventures Big & Small

Photos from a recent adventure       I just started listening to Tranquility by Tuesday  by Laura Vanderkam, and one of the ideas she mentioned was planning 2 adventures each week: one big and one small. As I was listening to her describe the rule, I thought about what I had planned this week and realized that I had a few adventures planned without thinking of them in that way. It really helped shift my mindset to realize that I do have some fun and novel things planned, and I'm curious to experiment with adding this to the routine, particularly as we are settling into a new city. I feel like I've plateaued a bit the last few weeks even though things are finally starting to feel settled down. I hit a point where I missed our Colorado friends and my old job, even if I feel like this move and taking time to be at home is right for us in the long run. Thinking through new adventures in this new phase of life is a way to balance some of this feel...

Toddler Travel--Road Trip Edition

So happy to be writing from Southern California after our road trip out from Colorado. It has been so nice to see family and enjoy cooler weather and time at the beach. This was far and away the longest Avi has ever been in the car, and it was definitely less relaxing to drive long distances with a toddler, but it actually went better than I thought it would.      I love road trips, so I'm happy that this is something we can look forward to lots more of as a family.  In case anyone else is planning to travel with their little one(s), I thought I would share a few things we did that helped, and a few things I wished we did differently. Tips:  *Bring various activities that can be easily done from a car seat. I brought some of Avi's favorite toys including: a toy she could buckle and unbuckle, a chunky beads and thread kit, and a paint with water set from Melissa and Doug's . I also brought bubbles which were a big hit although we left them in...
