Holiday Snapshots

Hoping you and your families have had warm, cozy, and festive holidays! I’ve been a bit quiet in this space as we’ve been immersed in lots of fun and festive family events. I thought I’d share a few of the moments that I want to remember from the holiday season this year. For context, we are an interfaith family that celebrates both Hanukkah and Christmas.

I want to remember…

*Our first Hanukkah party at the synagogue we joined this year. A was shy at first, but by the end was running and playing with all the kids and it was beautiful to see a table filled with lit menorahs. Particularly after the horrific shooting at Bondi Beach, it was good to be together with a larger group of Jews to celebrate.

*The 80th year of our family Christmas party. This party has been thrown every year (except 2020) since 1946. My mom’s side of the family gathers the Sunday before Christmas and Santa visits. A was delighted to see Santa, M was full of tears and retreated to another room for snuggles. This event fills me with all the holiday nostalgia every year, and I’m so glad the tradition continues. It was a lot of work getting us ready to make the 2 hour drive, there may have been some hanger involved when we realized our planned food stop wouldn’t work out and we needed to pivot, but it was so worth it. On the drive home, the kids were in their pjs, and Joel and I did a deep dive into some of the less played and more religious Christmas tracks to find our favorite versions. Overall winner: "O Come All Ye Faithful" by Loretta Lynn.

*A delivering holiday cards to all our neighbors. She was very excited to lead the charge on this and raced ahead with M.

*Watching Champagne Problems with Joel and delighting in all the holiday movie tropes. Was it great? No. Did I find it delightful? Yes! Also, the lead actress is Lyla Garrity from Friday Night Lights for any fans.

*Watching The Grinch with A (1966 edition) while M napped to kick off winter break.

*Christmas Eve was really cozy and slow. We were staying with my parents, who both came down with head colds. This was a bummer and led to the canceling of the big Christmas dinner and less time with my baby niece, but we did end up having a nice, smaller time together even if it wasn’t what we planned. We had breakfast at a nearby cafe that is closing in 2026, and the kids spent a lot of time playing in the loft where my parents keep some of my brother and my childhood toys. Watching the girls play with my old American Girl dolls was really sweet. It was a rainy day, and my dad, A, and I completed a puzzle. Sipping wine and doing a puzzle was peak holiday relaxation.

*We did Christmas morning with just our little family before my parents were up. A big hit was the coupon book we made our six-year-old which contained such items as “stay up 20 minutes late with a parent,” “pick the family movie night,” and the big ticket item, “go to build a bear.” M loved all the baby accessory items since she is very into dolls, and the girls had fun setting up a baby care zone. Later in the morning, my brother and his family came over and we decorated the backyard a bit to do an outdoor celebration. Lots of niece snuggles, exuberant present opening, and hanging with the family. We had dinner with my parents and came home and slept in our own beds.

What was a moment that stands out to you from the past week?

  1. What a fun holiday for your family! That family party sounds like quite the event! How cool that it has continued on for so many years!

Our Christmas Eve is the highlight for us. My husband’s cousin hosts. They have sort of adopted us into their family since Phil’s dad died. His cousins’ kids are all out of college so young kids are quite a novelty for them which means they gets tons of attention from the couple that hosts, especially the wife, and their kids. So Phil and I actually get to have adult conversations. It’s wonderful! Paul’s Sunday school class sang at the 4pm service so I enjoyed attending and hearing their little angelic voices!

What's Saving My Life: Sick Kid Edition

As I wrote yesterday, one of my daughters got sick, and so we didn’t make it to our camping trip! I had a really good attitude about it for most of the day and mostly felt grateful that she got sick at home and not 2 hours away, in the desert, where we would have to completely takedown a campsite before leaving. But by the afternoon, I was feeling a little grumpy and bummed to miss an adventure we’d been looking forward to and also cooped up from being inside all day with a kid who wasn’t feeling well. Inspired by San’s recent “Five Things That are Saving My Life Right Now” post, I decided to make my own list that was specific to sick days at home. In no particular order: *Emkfit videos on youtube. It’s awesome to have such a fun, silly, sweaty workout to do. I always feel happier having done the dance videos, and it really helps my mood on days when I’m at home a lot and restless *Good books. I posted earlier this week that October was not the best reading month for me, and so I spen...

Toddler Travel--Road Trip Edition

So happy to be writing from Southern California after our road trip out from Colorado. It has been so nice to see family and enjoy cooler weather and time at the beach. This was far and away the longest Avi has ever been in the car, and it was definitely less relaxing to drive long distances with a toddler, but it actually went better than I thought it would.      I love road trips, so I'm happy that this is something we can look forward to lots more of as a family.  In case anyone else is planning to travel with their little one(s), I thought I would share a few things we did that helped, and a few things I wished we did differently. Tips:  *Bring various activities that can be easily done from a car seat. I brought some of Avi's favorite toys including: a toy she could buckle and unbuckle, a chunky beads and thread kit, and a paint with water set from Melissa and Doug's . I also brought bubbles which were a big hit although we left them in...

Adventures Big & Small

Photos from a recent adventure       I just started listening to Tranquility by Tuesday  by Laura Vanderkam, and one of the ideas she mentioned was planning 2 adventures each week: one big and one small. As I was listening to her describe the rule, I thought about what I had planned this week and realized that I had a few adventures planned without thinking of them in that way. It really helped shift my mindset to realize that I do have some fun and novel things planned, and I'm curious to experiment with adding this to the routine, particularly as we are settling into a new city. I feel like I've plateaued a bit the last few weeks even though things are finally starting to feel settled down. I hit a point where I missed our Colorado friends and my old job, even if I feel like this move and taking time to be at home is right for us in the long run. Thinking through new adventures in this new phase of life is a way to balance some of this feel...
