Thanksgiving Hope-Tos

We are flying to Philadelphia for Thanksgiving today. We do this trip almost every year, and it’s a good chance to see lots of family. That said, traveling during the holidays with kids is a lot of work, and it’s easy to focus on the challenging aspects of the trip. We are still in the little kid phase, but every year it gets a little easier to travel, and this year I wanted to think about what things would make the trip feel fun for me too. I’m looking forward to:

*Seeing Wicked with my sister-in-law.

*Making sentimental recipes with my brother-in-law. We usually do most of the cooking for Thanksgiving, and it’s fun to prep a lot on Wednesday and catch up. I love making my grandma’s stuffing--it reminds me of being a little kid.

*Going on a walk and enjoying the woods. I love getting outside in an environment that is so different from the beach/chaparral area we live in.

*Taking time in the morning to do a morning routine. I want to take some introvert recharge time and do some of the things that make me feel grounded: journaling, exercising, or reading.

*Doing Friday Thanksgiving with my father-in-law. The day after Thanksgiving, we do a second meal with Joel’s dad. He usually orders some dishes from Gold Belly, and it’s really fun to see what type of dishes he picks out each year.

*Watching movies or reading in front of the fire.

If you celebrate Thanksgiving, what are some things you are looking forward to?

  1. I mainly look forward to my husband’s cooking!!! He is amazing in the kitchen, I just nod and clean up afterwards. He makes a mean turkey, great sweet potato’s, asparagus. Yum.

  4. Here's to a smooth, happy Thanksgiving! Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a letdown (my bday was on Thanksgiving and the whole day just felt weird) so I'm hoping this Thanksgiving goes a lot better. <3

  5. Oh, Philadelphia! We lived there for two years way back in the mid 90s. Now I’m remembering our Thanksgivings there, which were just the two of us, all of our family in California. Fun, just different.

My MIL is 88, and went through hip surgery a few months ago. She was in SO MUCH pain prior, and is now feeling so much better, so I’m looking forward to celebrating with her, and seeing a few other family members we don’t get to see very often.

I hope you have a great time!

  6. Safe travels. I hope your flights are on time and filled with kid friendly passengers. Enjoy your visit. It sounds like you have a great list of things to look forward to.

My SIL lives near O'Hare and she's hosting. Coach's siblings are awesome and I always enjoy connecting with them. Our kids enjoy their kids/adults too. I make a ton of pumpkin bread every year, so I guess that's the tradition. I had kids in competitive Irish dancing for over a decade and the Midwest Championships were always held T-giving weekend. Don't miss the anxiety that was linked to turkey day for years.

  7. I'm looking forward to not having to be in charge of cooking anything. I am to bring a salad. That's it! Yay!

  8. That sounds so wonderful. I always wished we had a large family to visit for the holidays. I hope you can really enjoy the time on the other side of the country.

What's Saving My Life: Sick Kid Edition

As I wrote yesterday, one of my daughters got sick, and so we didn’t make it to our camping trip! I had a really good attitude about it for most of the day and mostly felt grateful that she got sick at home and not 2 hours away, in the desert, where we would have to completely takedown a campsite before leaving. But by the afternoon, I was feeling a little grumpy and bummed to miss an adventure we’d been looking forward to and also cooped up from being inside all day with a kid who wasn’t feeling well. Inspired by San’s recent “Five Things That are Saving My Life Right Now” post, I decided to make my own list that was specific to sick days at home. In no particular order: *Emkfit videos on youtube. It’s awesome to have such a fun, silly, sweaty workout to do. I always feel happier having done the dance videos, and it really helps my mood on days when I’m at home a lot and restless *Good books. I posted earlier this week that October was not the best reading month for me, and so I spen...

Toddler Travel--Road Trip Edition

So happy to be writing from Southern California after our road trip out from Colorado. It has been so nice to see family and enjoy cooler weather and time at the beach. This was far and away the longest Avi has ever been in the car, and it was definitely less relaxing to drive long distances with a toddler, but it actually went better than I thought it would.      I love road trips, so I'm happy that this is something we can look forward to lots more of as a family.  In case anyone else is planning to travel with their little one(s), I thought I would share a few things we did that helped, and a few things I wished we did differently. Tips:  *Bring various activities that can be easily done from a car seat. I brought some of Avi's favorite toys including: a toy she could buckle and unbuckle, a chunky beads and thread kit, and a paint with water set from Melissa and Doug's . I also brought bubbles which were a big hit although we left them in...

FIGS Week 1

This month, I’m joining Elisabeth and other bloggers in the FIG collective. I’m trying to look for and notice the good things in life. The beginning of the month snuck up on me! But I’ve been adding small (and not so small good things) to a google doc for the past week as I notice the good that’s around me. A list of FIGs this week: *Hanging out with friends while kids play on the front sidewalk. I’m always grateful to live near friends and have those easy unplanned moments of community. *Playing hide and seek with the girls makes me feel like a kid again. I also think it’s hilarious that my youngest always finishes counting and then says, “mom, where are you?” *Right now whenever M tries to say “tag, you’re it!” it sounds like “tag, carrot!” Toddler phrases are the best. *Seeing a Western Bluebird and Red Shouldered Hawk at the park. *Reading Everyone is Lying . It’s kind of a candy read, and I am here for it. If the idea of a trad wife muder mystery sounds intriguing to you, I...
