Today there’s a rainstorm in California due to an atmospheric river. We tend to have pretty uniform weather in Southern California, so when we get a big rainy day it feels very novel. I know this probably seems silly to readers from places with more typical four seasons, but we really lean into hygge vibes at home particularly when it’s the first big rain storm of the year.
My six-year-old is particularly excited about the storm. While I was exercising yesterday, she and Joel made a rain gauge for the backyard, which she is regularly checking. Her enthusiasm reminds me of how I felt as an early career teacher in Boston rechecking the weather app in hopes of a snow day! She keeps asking to look at the weather forecast. Earlier today I told her, “you don’t need to look, it’s just going to rain.” She responded, “but Mom there are DETAILS.” Fair enough. I think fascination with weather changes might be universal.
I’m hoping that there are not any floods and landslides, particularly in LA where the fires hit hard this year, but in our little corner of the world, we’re looking forward to a cozy rainy day. I’m anticipating some squabbling siblings and frequent claims of boredom, but I’m also looking forward to decorating for the holidays, lots of cozy reading time, baking, hot cocoa and maybe taking a rain walk to the library or to visit some friends in the neighborhood.
Do you like rainy days? Is there any type of weather you eagerly anticipate, or at least, did as a kid? What are your ideal rainy day activities?

We got this storm in NorCal a little earlier than you guys, but I heard southern California was going to get hit a lot harder by it. Even up here big storms with lots of rain are novel. I've seen a whole classroom of 13yos up against the window to watch hard rain or big winds. They just aren't used to it! I also hope LA doesn't get hit too hard, after the fires. I've read that landslides are a big worry now.
ReplyDeleteMy husband grew up in Southern California and he loves the rain! I think it's the novelty because they don't (or should I say, used to) not get that much rain. He particularly enjoys real (summer) thunderstorms that we get in Germany :)
ReplyDeleteThe atmospheric river is hitting us here in NorCal this weekend, too. We need the rain, but I do hope it will be slow and steady enough for it to not cause landslides and flooding.
It never rains in Southern California…but it pours, man it pours. I don’t remember that song myself, but am aware of it.
ReplyDeleteI hope you all don’t get mudslides and so on, what a year you’ve had. I’m glad it hasn’t hit you personally. Here in NorCal it hasn’t been bad, at least not from what I have seen.
I love rainy days! One of my favorite things about summers in Florida is that we get an afternoon thunderstorm on a near-daily basis. I love seeing the clouds come in and all of the rain. (Even better because I work from home and don't have to drive in it, ha!)
ReplyDeleteRain can be so beautiful when it's slow and has big drops and when the light is just right. But it can also be so dark and moody. I love the smell of rain. We do get quiet a lot in my neck of the woods.
