October Favorites: Books

I always enjoy reading people's end of month reading recaps, so I decided to join in!

Favorite Books of the Month:
This was not my favorite reading month ever. I reread more than usual, which is atypical for me. I think it made me feel a bit stalled. BUT there were a few books I loved this month:
* The Correspondent by Virginia Evans--a fabulous epistolary novel. I really recommend it if you like character-driven novels with complex characters and a unique format.
* Heart the Lover by Lily King--A story of two people who meet in college and where the relationship goes from there. Also character-driven, and it almost reads like a series of novellas. I think I read the book in about two days, so it's a quick read. *A Physical Education: How I Escaped Diet Culture and Gained the Power of Lifting by Casey Johnson--An enaging memoir that really helped me as I was trying to build a new habit of strength training. I finished this book feeling motivated and like strength training was a doable new routine even if it's not the all-encompassing hobby it is for the author.
*Good Things by Samin Nosrat--My favorite cookbook I've read in a long time. We've made so many recipes from the book, and I love reading all of her notes. The whole thing reads like an ode to friendship, community, and gathering. I basically recommend this to anyone.

Liked but didn't love: *Never Been Shipped by Alicia Thompson
*A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna
*Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocy

Not For Me:*Bury Our Bones in Midnight Soil by V.E. Scwab--I love this author, but I found the characters unlikeable and the three perspectives slowed down the pace for me.

I'd love to hear any favorite recent reads of yours to add to my TBR. Right now I'm super excited to read my friend Emily's debut Heart Check, which comes out on November 18th!

  1. Sounds like you read some good ones. I'm been on a hiatus from reading due to cataracts, I sure do miss it. I'm visiting from the Nablopomo list. Have a great week!

  2. I LOVED The Correspondent!!! I read and liked a different book by Lily King, Writers and Lovers, and really liked it. So I'm thinking I would like this one as well. I'm intrigued by the lifting book- I'm a reluctant weight lifter, and I'm wondering if this book would inspire me? I'll check it out!
The book I just finished is Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo- it was so good!

  6. LOVED The Correspondent, and I really like Lily King, so I can't wait for my hold on Heart the Lovers to come in. I loved Norsat's other book and I have heard her on the pdcast circuit promoting this one-- it sounds great!

What's Saving My Life: Sick Kid Edition

As I wrote yesterday, one of my daughters got sick, and so we didn’t make it to our camping trip! I had a really good attitude about it for most of the day and mostly felt grateful that she got sick at home and not 2 hours away, in the desert, where we would have to completely takedown a campsite before leaving. But by the afternoon, I was feeling a little grumpy and bummed to miss an adventure we’d been looking forward to and also cooped up from being inside all day with a kid who wasn’t feeling well. Inspired by San’s recent “Five Things That are Saving My Life Right Now” post, I decided to make my own list that was specific to sick days at home. In no particular order: *Emkfit videos on youtube. It’s awesome to have such a fun, silly, sweaty workout to do. I always feel happier having done the dance videos, and it really helps my mood on days when I’m at home a lot and restless *Good books. I posted earlier this week that October was not the best reading month for me, and so I spen...

Toddler Travel--Road Trip Edition

So happy to be writing from Southern California after our road trip out from Colorado. It has been so nice to see family and enjoy cooler weather and time at the beach. This was far and away the longest Avi has ever been in the car, and it was definitely less relaxing to drive long distances with a toddler, but it actually went better than I thought it would.      I love road trips, so I'm happy that this is something we can look forward to lots more of as a family.  In case anyone else is planning to travel with their little one(s), I thought I would share a few things we did that helped, and a few things I wished we did differently. Tips:  *Bring various activities that can be easily done from a car seat. I brought some of Avi's favorite toys including: a toy she could buckle and unbuckle, a chunky beads and thread kit, and a paint with water set from Melissa and Doug's . I also brought bubbles which were a big hit although we left them in...

FIGS Week 1

This month, I’m joining Elisabeth and other bloggers in the FIG collective. I’m trying to look for and notice the good things in life. The beginning of the month snuck up on me! But I’ve been adding small (and not so small good things) to a google doc for the past week as I notice the good that’s around me. A list of FIGs this week: *Hanging out with friends while kids play on the front sidewalk. I’m always grateful to live near friends and have those easy unplanned moments of community. *Playing hide and seek with the girls makes me feel like a kid again. I also think it’s hilarious that my youngest always finishes counting and then says, “mom, where are you?” *Right now whenever M tries to say “tag, you’re it!” it sounds like “tag, carrot!” Toddler phrases are the best. *Seeing a Western Bluebird and Red Shouldered Hawk at the park. *Reading Everyone is Lying . It’s kind of a candy read, and I am here for it. If the idea of a trad wife muder mystery sounds intriguing to you, I...
